• Planting: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper. Position the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Backfill, firm gently, and water deeply. Spring or fall planting is ideal.

• Watering: Hydrangeas need consistent moisture—the name comes from Greek "hydor" meaning water. Water deeply at the base 1-2 times weekly, more often in heat. Keep soil evenly moist but never waterlogged, and avoid wetting foliage to prevent disease.

• Fertilizing: Apply a slow-release fertilizer formulated for acid-loving plants in early spring. For deeper blue color, use aluminum sulfate according to package directions to lower soil pH.

• Pruning: Most blue-purple hydrangeas bloom on old wood, so prune immediately after flowering in summer. Remove dead stems in spring, but avoid heavy pruning which removes next year's flower buds.

• Winter Protection: In colder zones, protect flower buds by mulching heavily around the base after the ground freezes. Consider wrapping burlap around plants in exposed locations.

• Bloom Time: Repeat flowering from early summer through autumn, with some reblooming varieties extending the show until frost.
